Navigating The Start Of A New Journey: A First-Day College Experience Map

For this project, I created a user experience map to help new students navigate their first day at Goldsmiths University. The map captures key actions, emotional states, and pain points students encounter when navigating the campus, locating classrooms, and reading their timetables.

Design Process and Research

The project began with research into student behavior, including interviews with first-year students and staff, as well as observations of how students interacted with campus maps and apps. These insights revealed significant challenges around wayfinding, timetable accessibility, and overall campus navigation.

Tools and Methods

To design the experience map, I utilized Figma for layout and visuals, and Miro to structure the journey mapping. By organizing information around key touchpoints (such as building entry, reading timetables, and room navigation), I illustrated user flows and emotional states. These tools helped me visually capture the various pain points and design opportunities.

Usability Testing and Iteration

I shared the initial journey map with a group of students to test its clarity and usability. Their feedback highlighted areas where improvements could be made, such as providing real-time updates on schedules and creating more intuitive campus maps. Based on this input, I iterated on the design, enhancing clarity and offering solutions that would make the first-day experience smoother.

Impact and Results

The final journey map not only highlighted pain points but also provided actionable solutions, such as:

  • Implementing clearer building signage and accessible entrances.

  • Creating concise, easy-to-read timetables with real-time updates.

  • Standardizing room numbering across campus.

  • Offering interactive campus maps that improve student navigation.
